In the reading, I read about how it’s hard for some people to “come out of the closet.” By that I mean coming out and saying that you’re gay or a lesbian. And most people get mocked and laughed at for being that way. Ellen DeGeneres had a show called, Ellen, after she came out, her rating fell. She was made fun of and mocked on all the late night shows and TV parody shows. When the show Friends aired it had two lesbians with a kid. They were mocked on the show, because they both breast feeding the kid and the others just looked at them as they were doing the wrong thing. The ratings stayed good because the two girls were being made fun of in the show, they were seen as doing the wrong thing in their relationship. On another TV show, Will and Grace, it has two guy and girl. Both the guys are gay, but one of them is out of closet gay and like a girl gay. The other one is more of straight gay and his best friend is a straight girl. They both go shopping together and talk about guys. This show showed both types of the homosexuality. I think that now and days, being gay is much of big deal as it was back in the day. I think that more people are open to it and more used it. But there are people and always will be people who don’t accept them as with other issues.

How do you think gays perceive these shows? Do you think that the fact that comedies deal most openly with queerness has an affect on queer audiences?

Think about dramatic programs that have dealt with queerness. ER had a lesbian doctor. Six Feet Under had a queer male relationship. How was that different from the ways in which queerness was being portrayed on comedic programs?
